Nominees for Chicago Best of 2017
Jazz Band category has 4 prospective winners
Independent weekly newspaper Chicago Reader nominated 4 different local jazz groups to the Best of 2017 ballot.
Bopology, 6 musicians with local roots since their inception in 1992, they were the Saturday night swing band at Joe’s Be bop cafe on Navy Pier from 1998-2005. Gigs at home games of Chicago White Sox and summer concerts, indoor shows and street fests their chops are in shape.
While at the Be-Bop in 1999 they recorded live the CD Windy City Swing. With more 1940’s retro jump blues songs swing dancers had their practice CD.
Casino Swing, recorded in 2002, highlights rat pack songs of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Louie Prima. Reminiscent of the bold brassy sound of the early 1960’s, the gambling lure and money of Las Vegas
The band’s third CD, Chicago Swing, features a style and sound steeped in Big-Band and Jump-Blues delivered via jazz. Longevity is its own reward.
The group’s volume facilitates conversation to avoid forcing guests into early departure. However, when punch and power are required — never a problem. Cohesive musicianship separates Bopology from other bands; performing together since 1992 develops swing. The band’s rhythm section is the trio – consists of upright bass, drum kit and piano -sometimes a guitar. With a trumpet and tenor saxophone horn line, the band resembles the mainstream style of 1950’s Miles Davis Quintet.
American Swing and Jazz is unique; this band brings them both to life. Fine musicianship moves people, both the dancer and the listener appreciate a swinging groove. Bopology prides itself on the authenticity of the music. Jazz improvisation enables individual musicians to showcase their unique talents and together they were nominated for the prestigious Best Jazz Band Chicago 2017 award.
